Kearney, Nebraska (October 31, 2019) – Four people were injured in a chain-reaction crash Monday morning in Kearney, according to a local news source.

The crash took place on Monday, October 28, in the area of 25th Street and Second Avenue.

Police said Herbert R. Hamilton, 53, of Callaway, was driving a 2006 Ford Taurus southbound on Third Avenue when he failed to yield the right of way to eastbound traffic on 25th Street. He pulled out in front of a city of Kearney sanitation truck, which was eastbound on 25th Street.

The sanitation truck clipped the Taurus. The Taurus was also broadsided by a 1995 Freightliner pulling a loaded grain trailer, which was heading eastbound on 25th Street.

The driver of the Freightliner, Delbert Bender, 66, of Kennesaw, was thrown onto the floor of the truck by the impact, causing him to lose control of the semi. The semi continued eastbound on 25th Street and drove through a red light at the intersection of Second Avenue.

The semi hit a 2003 Ford Ranger, which was traveling northbound on Second Avenue. The semi continued eastbound into the westbound lanes of West 25th Street, where it hit a 2006 Dodge Ram, towing a flatbed trailer with cargo, which was stopped at the red light.

The impact pushed the pickup into a 2010 Lexus, which was stopped waiting to turn northbound onto Second Avenue.

The driver of a seventh vehicle took evasive action and drove up onto a curb.

Stetson Hamilton, 16, who was a passenger in the Taurus, had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.

Stetson, Herbert, and Bender were taken to CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney. Bender was treated and released. Herbert was listed in serious condition while Stetson was treated and then airlifted to another hospital.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, Brian Guidry, 48, of Palmer Lake, Colo., was taken to Kearney Regional Medical Center where he was treated and later released.

Bender was cited for not wearing a seat belt.

The authorities are investigating the crash.
